Hypothecation Removal — RC Update After Loan Closure
Once your car or bike loan is fully paid, you must remove the hypothecation annotation from your RC. Here's the complete process - forms, documents, RTO steps, and timeline.
Updated May 2026
Form 35
Key form needed
₹200–500
Approx. RTO fee
15–30 days
Processing time
The bank's NOC and Form 35 have a validity period - typically 90 days from the date of issue. Submit your application to the RTO before this expires. A lapsed NOC means going back to the bank for a fresh one.
If you're planning to sell the vehicle after loan closure, complete hypothecation removal first. RC transfer to the buyer is significantly smoother when the RC clearly shows no lender.
In states like Karnataka and Maharashtra, the hypothecation removal process is available partially online via the Parivahan portal and state-specific portals. Check your state's transport department website.
After hypothecation removal, request a digital RC (Digi-RC) via DigiLocker. It has the same legal validity as the physical RC and is accepted by police, insurance companies, and at toll plazas.
How to Remove Hypothecation from RC
Get loan closure certificate from bank
After your final EMI, request a 'No Objection Certificate' (NOC) or 'Loan Closure Certificate' from your bank or NBFC. This document confirms the loan is fully repaid. Allow 7–15 days for the bank to issue it.
Get Form 35 signed by the bank
Form 35 is the 'Notice of Termination of Agreement'. It must be filled by the lender (bank/NBFC) and signed by an authorised bank officer. Some banks issue a pre-filled Form 35 along with the NOC.
Prepare your documents
Collect: original RC, bank NOC, signed Form 35, your ID proof, and address proof. Some RTOs also ask for Form 28 if you're simultaneously applying for a duplicate or updated RC.
Submit at RTO (or online)
Submit the application at the RTO where the vehicle is registered. Many states support partial online submission via the Parivahan portal. Pay the applicable fee at the RTO counter or online.
Receive updated RC
The RTO removes the hypothecation annotation and issues an updated RC smart card. This typically takes 15–30 working days. The new RC will not show any lender's name.
