FASTag in India - Complete Guide

FASTag is a prepaid rechargeable tag that enables automatic electronic payment of toll charges. It is affixed on the windshield of vehicles and uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for contactless toll payments. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) mandates FASTag for all four-wheelers.

FASTag was introduced to reduce congestion at toll plazas by enabling non-stop movement of vehicles. Vehicles without a valid, functioning FASTag are charged double the toll amount at all electronic toll plazas on national highways.

You can get a FASTag from any of the 23+ issuer banks including SBI, ICICI, HDFC, Axis, Kotak, and Paytm Payments Bank. The tag costs ₹100-200 and requires a minimum initial recharge of ₹200. It is linked to your vehicle registration number and can be recharged through UPI, net banking, debit/credit cards, or mobile wallets.

Benefits of FASTag include: cashless toll payments, reduced waiting time at toll plazas, SMS alerts for every transaction, easy online recharge, and nationwide interoperability across all NHAI toll plazas.
